How to Self-Tan with a Beard
And Keep it from Bleaching Your Facial Hair
HOW TO
12/6/2025
I was anchored just off Capri when a crew of young sailors rowed over, their eyes fixed not on my vessel, but on the glow across my face — that even, bronzed complexion that makes strangers whisper as if they’ve stumbled upon a myth.
They asked the same question I hear from Mykonos to the Maldives:
“Gatsby… how does your tan stay perfect?”
I laughed because while they imagined some exotic sun ritual or a blessing from the gods of the Mediterranean, the truth is far simpler, and far more deliberate.
Out here, where the days are ruled by salt spray and shifting winds, a sailor learns precision. Before every sunset sail, I smooth a touch of moisturizer around the edges of my beard — a thin barrier that keeps the tanning formula from clinging where it shouldn’t. A quick brush through the whiskers, a sweep of a cloth afterward, and the color settles exactly where I want it: on my skin, not in the strands of hair framing it.
My tan? Always flawless.
My beard? Always sharp, never brassy.
The sun may paint my world in gold, but I decide where that gold stays.
1. For thick beards
If you have a thick beard, then just make sure you work the tanner into the beard line to prevent tan lines and an unatural look.
2. For Stubble
A. Start With a Clean, Prepped Canvas.
Just like your skin, facial hair needs prep. Cleansing and lightly exfoliating the skin under your facial hair reduces buildup, which helps your tan develop evenly instead of clinging to random patches.
Pro tip:
Use a gentle exfoliating cleanser like glycolic acid or beard scrub 1–2 times weekly to prevent dry skin and tan accumulation. The DHA (the tanning agent within tanning drops) will accenuate dry dead skin.
B. After exfoliating, work the tanner under your hair.
Pro tip:
If you’re using a larger amount of tanning drops, you may notice some hair discoloration. Not to worry, this is temporary. To solve that problem, take a clean towel or dry washcloth and gently wipe downward through your beard in the direction of hair growth. Do this immediately after applying the tanning drops.
3. Stick With Hydrating, Clean-Formula Tanners.
Harsh, drying self tanners can lift pigment or cause patchiness.
Gatsby Tan formulas are designed to avoid this because they include:
Sunflower seed oil
Rose hip oil
Panthenol
Vitamin E
Cucumber and botanical extracts
These help protect both the skin and the beard’s natural texture and tone.
